The Media Union SSM
The Media Union SSM (Swiss Syndicate for Media Employees) represents employees working in electronic Media (radio, television, online). The SSM today has about 3500 members with a high level of unionization in Swiss public broadcasting. Thus is our Union a social and contractual partner of SRG SSR (Swiss Radio and Television Services it is a non-profit-making public service undertaking). The number of members in private radio and private television companies but also among freelancers is continuously growing. The Media Union is for all men and women who work in electronic media be they video editors, moderators, secretaries, camera people, online editors, journalists or sound technicians.
The SSM with its eight Secretariats within Switzerland offers expert knowledge. Further information and tips regarding membership can be obtained from the appropriate union office. The SSM is also internationally networked and a member of the IJF (International Federation of Journalists) and the UNI Global Union.
The SSM offers help when conflicts occur in the workplace, offers comprehensive legal insurance and legal advice. Representation of employee interests and assistance during personal difficulties with insurance companies, dismissal, discrimination, etc. are also offered.
An important duty of the SSM is the bargaining for collective agreements (wage agreements, collective labor agreements) with electronic media employers. A Collective Bargaining Agreement was successfully reached between the SSM and the SRG SSR (Swiss Radio and Television Services). A Collective Bargaining Agreement (GAV Gesamtarbeitsvertrag) was also reached with the TV-Production Center, TPC, and in 2007 the first Collective Bargaining Agreement with a private electronic media company was achieved. In this area the SSM is striving to reach other agreements and is setting its resources to this end.
The Central Secretariat will gladly answer any further questions about our Media Union.
